The Beauty of Studio Lighting

I love to learn!  If I could spend the rest of my life in school, I would be happy.  When it comes to photography, I really feel like you can never stop appreciating new techniques, ways of doing things, challenging what you already know, trying new things. I feel lucky to live in New York, a city that draws talented photographers to come and to teach, and I take advantage of this by attending as many workshops as I can.

I recently took a workshop at Calumet Photographic called “Face to Face: The Business of Beauty and Beyond” with Matthew Jordan Smith.  He shared brilliant techniques for portrait photography, that are as applicable for beauty and celebrities, as for newborns and maternity.  A few days before the workshop, I was contemplating not going, because I have so much to do.. that would take an entire day.. and on and on. I am so glad that I did not talk myself out of it!  It was nice to get out from behind my computer, to learn new techniques, and to incorporate them into what I do everyday.

Matthew Jordan Smith has shot portraits for clients such as Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks, yet what most appealed to me about attending his workshop was to understand how he creates an environment where the subjects instantly feel comfortable in showing their true selves. And as a result, he creates beautiful and clean images that stand apart. This has been a subject of great importance to me, as while I appreciate and love to do on-location portraits, which is typically referred to as “lifestyle Photography”,  I also love to create portraits with studio lighting.  I find that it allows for a beautiful and clean look that can not be achieved elsewhere. However, I feel that clients hear the word “studio”, and think of the old fashioned custom of bringing your family to the portrait studio at the mall for that posed shot.  While that is what you can typically expect there, Matthew helped to affirm the fact that a studio lighting session with a good photographer sets the stage, and lets real moments happen. We create a certain atmosphere – a mood, a energy, but we do not pose. We capture the moment.

The confirmation of this fact from a photographer such as Matthew Jordan Smith made the day worth it for me, but in addition to that, Matthew shared some other great tips.  Whether you are a professional photographer or enjoy photography as a hobby, I am sure that you will appreciate his advice.  In my next post I will share some of those tips with you.  In the meantime, below are some images I captured that day.

Mother’s Day Contest

The “Mommy Moments” portrait promotion was such a great hit that I have decided to add a Mother’s Day contest. Perhaps I am feeling extra generous these days. The winner of this contest will get $150 towards print credits on their next portrait session! Regular portrait session prices apply.

Here’s how to enter!
2 ways, 2 entries:

1st entry–leave a comment on my blog letting me know what motherhood means to you. A sentence or two is fine.

2nd entry– post this contest on your Facebook page, making sure to provide a link to this post. Then come back here and leave a blog comment letting me know.

*Make sure to leave a separate comment for each entry, otherwise it will only count as one.

(winner will be selected by random number generator)

Contest will end Saturday, May 8th at midnight. Winner will be announced on Mother’s Day!  Good luck!!!

Allison Penna - There are no words that can truly describe what being a mother means to me. It's more of a feeling. Every time I look at my beautiful baby boy, I get an instant and overwhelming feeling of love, pride, accomplishment & privilege all at once. It's one of those feelings that's hard to contain. When I hold Luke in my arms I can't help but look at him and think to myself, "God has blessed me in so many ways. But, to have this perfect little baby to call my son is the best blessing of all"

Valerie Lynch - Motherhood means less focus on "me, myself, and I" for the awesome privledge of loving my son unconditionally, guiding him with purpose, shaping him with commitment and inspiring him to be a man of integrity.

Lia - Motherhood to me means nurturing, loving and teaching. I've learned to put my needs aside and focus on this little human being whose whole life depends on me. It's the most challenging, yet rewarding, job I've ever had.

Danielle Kreitsch - Being a mommy is absolutely the best blessing in life. To know that you had a hand in creating this beautiful gift from God is indescribeable. My sons are my whole world and I can't imagine my life being any other way. I would do absolutely anything for them, no questions asked, no matter what.

Danielle Kreitsch - just posted your contest on my fb page : )

Judith - Motherhood is one of life's most incredible and rewarding adventures. I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to become a mother. I am constantly amazed by the joy that comes with watching this little person -- a person who was growing inside me not long ago -- grow and learn. I can't imagine anyone would ever trade this experience for anything.

Allison Penna - I posted this to my Facebook too!

Sharmey - just posted the contest on my facebook page :-)

Sharmey - Mother's Day reminds me of the most amazing, out of this world feeling in the world. This is the feeling I get when my 2 year old wraps her arms around me and says 'I love you so much Mamaa'.

JT’s Baptism

This is one of the most photogenic baby boy I have ever encountered! He loves the camera!! The family celebrated JT’s Baptism at St. Agnes Church in New york City, with a reception that followed at Metrazur in Grand Central Station.  It was a beautiful day.
